WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits

Seven top performing IWEG students in this course will receive study scholarships from E&J Gallo Winery Canada, Drinks Ontario, Wines of Argentina, Wines of Germany and Wines of Greece to continue studying at IWEG with the WSET Level 3 Award in Wines in 2019-2020!​

A beginner to intermediate level qualification exploring wines and spirits for those working in the industry, looking to join the industry or wine and spirit enthusiasts.

Prerequisite: None. Expect to spend 12 hours of preparation and review over the duration of the course, outside of the classroom.

This 20-hour course provides fundamental product knowledge and systematic tasting skills. You will:

  • Understand how wine is made
  • Explore major grape varieties and key wine-growing regions
  • Consider the vineyard and winery factors that influence the style of wines
  • Learn what classifications and other labelling terms mean
  • Develop assessment and description skills as you sample wines, sparkling wines, fortified wines, spirits and liqueurs
  • Understand and be able to apply basic principles of wine storage, service and food and wine pairing
  • How to describe wine using the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

Upon successful completion of a 50-question multiple-choice exam (at least 55% to pass) you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.

  • WSET course-pack (text book, study guide, SAT card)
  • Tutored tasting of 60 samples aligned with WSET specifications
  • 6 ISO tasting glasses
  • Access to IWEG’s unique student resources, including videos, maps, slide presentations and other study aids
  • Bonus class on Argentinian wines presented by Wines of Argentina

Available formats:

Weekly Format: 10 x Once per week evening classes (7:00 pm to 9:00 pm);
Condensed Format: 3 full condensed days Mondays or Saturdays (9:30 am to 4:30 pm)

Course Fee

$975.00 CAD all inclusive. Please note that IWEG is HST exempt by the CRA. Income tax receipts are issued to all students for the applicable tax year.

IWEG Cancellation and Refund policy:

Withdrawal up to 2 weeks prior to course start date: Refund of tuition, less $150 administration fee.  Withdrawal between 2 weeks and 3 days prior to course start date: Refund of 50% of tuition less $150 administration fee.  Withdrawal 3 days or less to course start date: No refund Please note all course materials are paid upon registration, and are non-refundable.

Condensed classes only: Withdrawal up to 4 weeks prior to course start date: Refund of tuition, less $150 administration fee.  4 weeks prior to course start date: No refund.  Study materials are mailed to all condensed students one month prior to course start date, there is no refund once materials have been sent.

Policy on changing your exam date to an alternative date.

Please note IWEG's policy on changing your exam date:

When you register for a WSET or WSG course, you are booked to take your exam on a specific date, which is indicated in your Course Schedule. You can view this before registering, and when you register, you will be reminded.

If you decide not to write your exam on the date you are registered for, this is what you must know:

  • For WSET Levels 1 to 3 and WSG courses, you have to ask to change the date at least 15 days before the exam date, by writing to admin@iweg.org.
  • For WSET Level 4 Diploma you have to ask to change the date at least 75 days before the exam date, by writing to admin@iweg.org.
  • You must pick a new exam date within 12 months from the start of your current course.
  • You may change your exam date a maximum of two times during the 12 months. You can choose from any exam dates/re-sit dates listed on the course page of the IWEG website. It is possible that your first choice may not work, if the exam is full.
  • Each time you change your exam date, there is a $150 fee.
  • After the 12-month period, from the start of your current course, if you still need to sit the exam, you will be charged an exam “re-sit” fee, which varies depending on the course, as well as the $150 fee.
  • The only exception to this policy is in case of a valid and verified personal or family emergency, subject to approval from WSET and WSG.

Classes run every Sunday evening @ 7PM - 9PM January 13th - March 24, 2019 @ The Bauer Kitchen, 87 King St S #102, Waterloo, ON N2J 1R1.

There is no class February 17th 2019.

EXAM March 24th @ 7PM.  Students will receive study materials and ISO glassware the first evening of class. It is expected that moving forward after the first class students will prepare for each week in advance. Additional course study materials are available to students through their IWEG student account, it is highly recommended that students avail themselves to these tools. Lead Educator: Robert Miller

Rob Miller has over twenty years experience in the beverage industry. A certified Sommelier with the International Sommelier Guild, Miller also holds accreditation with The Wine & Spirits Education Trust in the UK, the American- based Society of Wine Educators and the Court of Master Sommeliers, as well as a Certificate in Oenology & Viticulture from the University of Guelph. He currently works with wine distributor The Vine Agency, as well as running his drinks consulting and promotions company, "Guud Wein".

Classes run every Wednesday @ 7PM, January 16th - April 3rd 2019 @ IWEG, 211 Yonge St., Ste. 501 There is no class March 14th during March Break. EXAM April 3rd @ 7PM.  Students will receive study materials and ISO glassware the first evening of class. It is expected that moving forward after the first class students will prepare for each week in advance. Additional course study materials are available to students through their IWEG student account, it is highly recommended that students avail themselves to these tools. WSET Level 2 Award In Wines And Spirits CONDENSED MARCH 2019 Starts Mar. 09, 2019

This is the Condensed format WSET Level 2 Award In Wines and Spirits. Classes are three full days of instruction: Saturdays March 9th, 23rd & 30th 2019 - 9:30am - 4:30pm.  No Class on March 16th due to March Break.The condensed course length is 15 hours + 1 hour exam.  This format does not include a bonus class on Argentinian wine.  Final exam is March 30th 2019 @ 1:30 PM. It is strongly advised that students collect their study packs in advance so that they may begin reading and familiarize themselves with the material in time for the first day of class on March 9th 2019. Students have access to additional course materials through their IWEG student account, and it is highly recommended that they avail themselves of these tools.

WSET Level 2 Award in Wines & Spirits in Sudbury! Instructor is Heather Downey. Deadline to register is Friday, February  28, 2019. Classes run on seven consecutive Wednesdays, March 20th  - May 1st 2019 @ 6PM - 9PM @ Collège Boréal, 21 Lasalle Boulevard Sudbury.  Exam May 1st 2019 @ 8:30pm. Students will receive study materials and ISO glassware the first evening of class.  It is expected that moving forward after the first class, students will prepare for each week in advance.  Additional course study materials are available to students through their IWEG student account; it is recommended that students make use of these valuable tools.
