As a wine connoisseur, Jan Klakurka holds the diploma from the U.K.-based Wine & Spirit Education Trust, the world’s leading wine trade organization and the corresponding AIWS designation. With this background, Jan teaches in the intermediate and advanced certificate programs of the WSET offered in Toronto, has held sessions at the Gourmet Food & Wine Show, and plays host to private wine tastings.

Together with his wife and fellow WSET diploma graduate, Candice Chow, Jan has followed his passion for wine to several of the world’s great wine regions. Besides having savoured the big names of Napa, Tuscany, southern Rhone, and the Okanogan, Candice & Jan have taken their sense of wine adventure to more off-the-beaten-track-but-nonetheless-compelling wine regions including Corsica, Baja, and Languedoc-Rousillion.

For his day job, Jan is Director, Corporate Planning and Business Development of the Wasteco Group of Companies, specializing in waste management and recycling services, based in Toronto. At Wasteco, he leads strategy, long-term and operational planning, change management, and development activities.

Prior to Wasteco, Jan was Corporate Controller and Director, Process Improvement for U.K.-based infrastructure and construction services company, Carillion, and was a senior project manager with the strategy consulting practice of Deloitte & Touche LLP, leading transformation engagements with Fortune 500 companies globally. Jan’s professional experience also includes working for both General Motors of Canada and McCarney Greenwood, an entrepreneur-focused CA firm.

Outside of his role in industry, Jan is an instructor in the undergraduate Commerce program at the University of Toronto, where he teaches fourth-year Introduction to Strategic Management. He also contributes facilitated sessions in Operations Management annually to first-year students at U of T.

Recent speaking engagements at the University of Toronto, Independent Wine Education Guild, Brock University, and the Ivey Business School were on leadership, consulting, financial management, wine training, and career planning.
