Fusing your two passions - food and wine

Gain more confidence and better understanding of the important grape varieties and styles of wine they produce

"I own and operate a catering company in Toronto called Phancy Food & Catering, where it's been my goal to create a wine program and offer sommelier services to my clientele. I only began to appreciate and take interest in wine over the last few years after being introduced to natural, low-intervention wines. Taking courses through IWEG has been a great way to fuse my two passions (food and wine) while creating new professional goals. Learning about the terroir and flavours of wine is similar to learning about pairing food flavours. I'm excited to eventually offer food and wine pairings to my clients as I believe it will help me grow my business significantly." -  Meagan Bowden

WSET Level 2 Award in Wines provides fundamental product knowledge and systematic tasting skills. This course will:

  • Explain how wine is made
  • Explore the style and quality of wines made from over 22 regionally important grape varieties produced in over 70 wine growing regions around the world
  • Explore how environmental factors, grape growing, winemaking and maturation options influence the style and quality of wines made from eight principal grape varieties:
    • Chardonnay
    • Pinot Grigio/Gris
    • Sauvignon Blanc
    • Riesling
    • Cabernet Sauvignon
    • Merlot
    • Pinot Noir
    • Syrah/Shiraz
  • Teach how classifications and other labelling terms indicate origin, style and quality
  • Help develop assessment and description skills as you sample wines, sparkling wines and fortified wines
  • Show how to understand and be able to apply basic principles of wine storage, service and food and wine pairing
  • Teach how to describe wine using the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine (SAT)
