INTERVIEW WITH RACHEL BROWN FROM WSET GLOBAL
Rachel Brown DipWSET is the International Training and Development Manager at the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET). She supports Approved Programme Providers throughout the Americas (excl. USA). She also manages the International Educator Training Programmes, supports the South American Diploma Programmes, and regularly assists the team at trade fairs, events and masterclasses across all regions. We reached out to her to hear about her experience in the industry:

Why did you pursue a wine and spirits education?
I fell in love with wine when I lived in Italy for a year as part of my university degree, but I didn’t know anything about it. My housemates in Italy loved talking about wine and initially I struggled to join in. As my Italian got better so did my appreciation of the local wine so when I graduated a year later I was desperate to see what opportunities there were working in the trade. I joined Majestic Wine (one of the UK’s largest wine retailers) and they sponsored me through both my WSET Level 3 and Level 4 Diploma.  I spent 7 years talking day in day out about wine to my customers and loved every second of it.

What has been a career highlight for you in this industry?
I’ve been really lucky in the 12 years I’ve been working in the trade. Highlights at the beginning were being sent by Majestic Wine to California and the Barossa Valley, and of course being awarded the Wines of Portugal Scholarship by Michael Broadbent for my Unit 3 paper of the Diploma. Now working at WSET I get to travel the world– highlights this year include visiting Nashik in India, going to visit our APPs in Chile and working with Singapore Airlines to train up some WSET Educators. The best thing about working in the trade though is the people I meet – it’s certainly a gang of like-minded, interesting, friendly and supportive people.

If you could some advice to a student pursuing a WSET education, what would it be?
I guess I should say study hard and read the exam questions properly…but more importantly enjoy it – study doesn’t always have to be reading a book. I used to sneakily write tasting notes on napkins in bars and restaurants and get friends together to quiz me and test me on blind tastings. I loved involving my family in my studies, gently coercing them to take holidays to nearby wine regions such as Jerez and Alsace instead of heading off to the beach – wine has become a passion for them as much as it has for me.

IWEG STUDENT PROFILE
My name is Jasmine Lee I have been working in the hospitality industry since I was thirteen years old. I started out in my home town of Whitby at a local gem, but my passions for food and drink brought me to the city of Toronto seven years ago. Entering the service industry with no experience in fine dining was a difficult task, but I was quickly able to make great connections throughout the city and work my way up to where I am now: Momofuku, an internationally recognized company. I am a server on the third floor of the building at Daishō, which is focused on serving local, seasonal ingredients and is led by an amazing female chef.

One of the most inspiring things about this company is how they go about treating and caring for their team members; the encouragement we receive is unending. They support our career growth through field trips, friendly cooking competitions, and bi-annual scholarships that allow you to pursue new avenues of knowledge. The latter is how I came to be involved with IWEG Drinks Academy. In the spring of 2017, I applied to the company scholarship, which allows you to propose anything that you feel would take you to the next step in your career. My proposal was that I take three first level courses through IWEG; the WSET Level 1 Award in Spirits, WSET Level 1 Award in Sake and the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines. The company approved my proposal and, in May 2017, I started my first course.

Having completed all my courses, I am more hungry than ever to learn all I can about these three very different and unique types of libations. I feel a new sense of confidence when speaking to my guests and even my teammates about what would pair best with our flavours, what to suggest to a guest who is new to all types of spirits, sake, or wine and even what to drink outside of work in my personal life. My greatest hope is that I may soon be able to apply for the second level of one or all of these courses so that I may continue to expand my knowledge and feel an even greater sense of accomplishment than I already do. I want to sincerely thank the IWEG Drinks Academy for asking me to be in their newsletter, as well as my company,Momofuku, for helping me to achieve my dreams.

WINES OF SOUTH AFRICA SCHOLARSHIP WINNER
Congratulations to Jessica Helferty for her outstanding performance in WSET Level 1 Award in Wines. Jessica is the recipient of a study scholarship from Wines of South Africa(WOSA) to continue studying with the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits at IWEG.

"Wines of South Africa is thrilled to support IWEG and particularly, a student who is further looking to expand their wine knowledge. Of any place in the winemaking world, South Africa is often misunderstood so we know without a doubt the great import more tasting and learning can have on perceptions of wine and place,” said Laurel Keenan, Market Manager, WOSA for Canada and the United States.

"Wines of South Africa is a valuable partner for IWEG, enabling us not only to enhance the student learning experience, but also to provide unique ways to help our students achieve their personal and professional goals,” said Paul Miles, Executive Director of IWEG.

It is constituted as a not-for-profit company (sec21) and is totally independent of any producer or wholesaling company. It is also independent of any government department, although it is recognized by government as Export Council.

WOSA's mandate is to promote the export of all South African wines in key international markets. Traditional markets include the United Kingdom, Germany Sweden and the Netherlands. More recently, WOSA has also been developing markets for South African wines in the United States, Canada, Russia, and Asia.
