A YEAR IN REVIEW

2016 was a year of many accomplishments and opportunities for IWEG staff, instructors and students. Here are some of our proudest moments:
  • Surpassed our 154 WSET Diploma graduates number as we continue to hold the record for largest amount of diploma graduates in Canada! Congratulations to our newest diploma graduates: Tristan Bragalia-Murdock, Nicole Campbell, Brieana Dema, Jacqueline Foisy, Richard Godin, Nupur Gogia, Courtney Henderson, Akiko Kurakata, Faye Maclachlan, Darrin Mak, Don McEachern, William Predhomme and Marnie Williamson.
     
  • The Italian Trade Commission in Canada became IWEG's first Gold Sponsor with the sponsorship of the new Italian Wine Scholar program. IWEG is one of the firstinternational schools to offer the program.
     
  • Wines of Germany (German Wine Institute - DWI) became an IWEG Silver Sponsor for a two-year period of the second year of study of the WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines and Spirits
     
  • Revamped the WSET Level 1 Award in Wine with an enriched food and wine pairing component delivered by chef/sommelier/food writer Tonia Wilson.
     
  • Introduced distillery tours to our WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits and WSET Level 3 Award in Saketo enhance experiential learning for our students.
     
  • Led a tutored tasting on German Riesling with the German Wine Queen at the Gourmet Food and Wine Expo, and participated in the first SwirlTO.
     
  • Launched the new WSET Level 3 Award in Wines, including a condensed format, with a teaching team consisting exclusively of subject experts who are also WSET Diploma Graduates and WSET Certified Educators.
     
  • Added a Niagara winery and vineyard tour to our innovative Ontario Brave New Wines course. 
     
  • Offered unique tutored tastings led by industry leading associations such as Bureau Interprofessionnel des Vins de Bourgogne, Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e Porto, the International Cool Climate Chardonnay CelebrationWines from Spain, and many others.
  • Introduced study trip scholarships to Italy and Germany sponsored by the Italian Trade Commission of Canada and Wines of Germany.
     
  • Coordinated the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair Wine CompetitionJohn Switzer, Dip WSET led the team of independent IWEG WSET Diplomagraduates in the judging.
  • Launched partnerships with several leading agencies and wineries in Canada.
     
  • Brainstormed with WSET Global representatives growth strategies and student learning opportunities.
     
  • Offered several tutored tasting opportunities with our Signature Series seminars and WSET DiplomaMasterclasses led by industry experts such as John SzaboMS, Bruce Wallner, MS and Eugene MlynczykMW

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AT IWEG
IWEG is Canada’s premier student-focused institution for wine, spirits and sake education and we are committed to partnering with our students to help them achieve their professional goals and personal aspirations. As part of this ongoing commitment we are pleased to offer the following scholarship opportunities for IWEG students:

Drinks Ontario Scholarships
1) Jack Ackroyd Memorial Scholarship Award: the top scoring IWEG student in WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits will receive a scholarship prize from a Drinks Ontario sponsor.

2) Jack Ackroyd Memorial Scholarship Award: the top scoring IWEG student in WSET Level 3 Award in Wines will receive a scholarship prize from a Drinks Ontario sponsor.

3) David A. Churchill Memorial Scholarship Award: the top scoring IWEG student in the WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines and Spirits "Unit 1: The Global Business of Alcoholic Beverages" will receive a scholarship prize from a Drinks Ontario sponsor.

Italian Trade Commission Scholarship 
1) The top performing student in the new Italian Wine Scholar will receive a study trip scholarship from the Italian Trade Commission in Canada to a consorzio (specific wine region) in Italy.

Wines of Germany Scholarships
1) The top performing IWEG student in WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits will receive a study scholarship from Wines of Germany to continue studying with the WSET Level 3 Award in Wines in 2017.

2) The top performing IWEG student in the WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines and Spirits "Unit 3: Light Wines of the World" will receive a study trip scholarship from Wines of Germany to a featured German wine region.
