The Independent Wine Education Guild (IWEG) and Austrian Wine are pleased to announce a two-year partnership agreement to increase the understanding and enjoyment of Austrian wines among industry professionals in Ontario.

Under the term of the agreement, two exclusive Master Classes will be presented at IWEG, showcasing why Austrian Wine is one of the most interesting phenomenon happening in the world right now, with specialty wines found on every good wine list, appreciated by wine experts and highly acclaimed by journalists.

"We are delighted to support wine education activities with IWEG. Austrian Wine’s mandate is to promote the export of bottled quality Austrian wine in key international markets. IWEG is a valuable and prestigious educational partner that will help us to achieve these goals in Ontario,” said Barbara Waxenegger, Head of Department Markets West for the Austrian Wine Marketing Board.

As the largest advocacy and public policy association for California wine, and the only group representing the industry at the state, federal and international levels, Wine Institute's Officers, Board of Directors and professional staff work to create an environment where the wine community can flourish and contribute in a positive fashion to our nation, state and local communities.

Based in San Francisco, the Wine Institute also has offices in Sacramento, Washington DC, six regions of the U.S. that oversee the work of forty-five state contract consultants, and seven foreign countries. Eighty California vintners provide guidance for the Institute as members and alternates of the Board of Directors.

The Canadian office coordinates a number of promotional activities every year designed to educate and inform media, trade and consumers about the quality and diversity of products available from the Golden State.

The California Wine Fair is the cornerstone of the Wine Institute’s Canadian activities. CAPS @ IWEG WORKSHOP SERIES
The new CAPS @ IWEG Workshops are an exciting forum to encourage camaraderie, ongoing professional development, and networking for sommeliers within the food and beverage industry. A variety of workshops will provide the opportunity to continually develop the knowledge, service, and management skills required by Canadian sommeliers.

Sept 27th: Aroma Seminar
Drawing on varied perspectives ranging from chemosensory science and dog cognition, to perfumery, wine and 'smell walking/mapping,' this 'activity-centric' workshop will teach you how (and why) to put your noses to the ground, rather than smelling with the mind. This is especially important in the context of wine education where sensory evaluation isn't about recalling one's own personal memories, emotions or associations as it is about understanding the relationships between the ecologies and processes that produce valued sensory characteristics.

You will also learn how to start your own 'DIY aroma library' and try out some creative techniques to document, represent and communicate your knowledge to others 'beyond words.' This is a unique, hands-on workshop where we will explore 6 aromas and 6 wines to investigate the importance of smell.

Melanie McBride is a Toronto-based educator and researcher and founder of the ‘Aroma Inquiry Lab’ at Ryerson’s Responsive Ecologies lab. Melanie's research investigates the ‘hidden curricula’ of aroma culture with a focus on learning inquiry and DIY making practices with aroma materials. Melanie has undertaken site-specific research of aroma-rich sites in Canada and France to explore the use of raw, living and processed aroma materials in various learning contexts. Her research contributes to providing a more ecologically situated and creative approaches to learning, communicating and making with aroma 'from the nose down.' WSET LEVEL 1 AND 2 AWARD IN SPIRITS
IWEG's Education Director and spirits expert Julia Rogers DipWSET shares her insights on why wine enthusiasts and industry professionals should include spirits in their studies:

"Did you know the global spirits market surpasses the wine market in sales and volume, and is growing exponentially faster? More people in more parts of the world are drinking spirits over wine on more occasions and are spending more to do so.

Top beverage companies furthermore typically own both wine and spirit brands. For example, Pernod-Ricard owns Campo Viejo and Jacob’s Creek, along with Beefeater and Jameson.

No student of wine should ignore the importance of spirits, or their appeal as beverages with intriguing history, fascinating production methods, compelling flavours, and multiple contexts for enjoyment.

I am pleased that we are now offering WSET Level 1 Award in Spirits in an enhanced format with an extended cocktail focus, and WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits (updated curriculum for Fall 2017) with an improved emphasis on cocktails and vermouth, and unique to IWEG, a tour of a local micro-distillery.

Both courses involve tasting of iconic samples, active learning, and expert guidance from IWEG’s Certified Spirits Specialists, Certified Educators, and industry guests. Successful course completion leads to an internationally recognized WSET Certification."
