Dive deeper into the world of wine with WSET Level 3 Award in Wines

WSET Level 3 Award in Wines is an advanced level course for wine industry professionals, or those seeking to join the profession, or for wine enthusiasts wishing to develop a deeper understanding of wine.

Prerequisite: None, however successful completion of WSET Level 2 Award Wines and Spirits is recommended, or an equivalent level of  wine knowledge, as is experience with writing English at the college level. Expect to spend 50 hours of preparation and review outside of the classroom over the duration of the course. 

This 40-hour course provides in-depth and detailed understanding of how human and natural factors in vineyard and winery affect wine style, quality and price. It further develops systematic tasting and description skills. You will:
  • Explore in detail grape varieties, wines and wine-growing regions
  • Develop a thorough understanding of grape-growing and wine-making practices
  • Be able to explain how and why various vineyard and winery factors shape wines of all styles and quality levels
  • Assess and describe wine with confidence, and be able to make storage and service suggestions
  • Learn how to taste wines, describe their characteristics and evaluate their quality, using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)
Upon successful completion of a tasting test and a theory test - please note candidates are required to pass both components with at least 55% - you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.

The course includes:
  • WSET course-pack in electronic format (e-text book, e-study guide, e-SAT card)
  • Tutored tasting of all wines, sparkling wines and fortified wines specified by WSET
  • Thirty minutes per session of exam prep including progressive writing exercises, quizzes, and blind tasting practice
  • Access to seven formal tests, with feedback provided by IWEG’s Director of Education
  • Access to IWEG’s unique student resources, including videos, maps, slide presentations, a weekly study planning guide and two extensive study packs

Join WSET's first ever virtual graduation ceremony

While usually, the WSET Awards & Graduation ceremony is an annual event held at London’s Guildhall for WSET Diploma graduates, this year WSET is taking it online for their first ever virtual graduation. This event marks the 15th year that the graduating WSET Diploma class is recognized at the graduate procession albeit virtually.

All virtual ceremonies will take place for graduates on Thursday, March 18th at regionally appropriate times. Cheer on our four IWEG graduates by watching the virtual ceremony!

Learn all about spirits with expert bartender Christina Veira

WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits is a beginner to intermediate level spirits course for enthusiasts or those working in the industry, or hoping to enter the industry. There are no prerequisites.

This course provides fundamental product knowledge and systematic tasting skills. You will:
  • Explore major spirits categories and styles, as well as liqueurs, vermouth and cocktails
  • Learn in detail about the 4 main steps in spirits production
  • Learn what labelling terms mean
  • Develop assessment and description skills as you sample a range of benchmark examples using the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Spirits® (SAT)
  • Understand basic principles of spirits storage and service
  • Learn about cocktail equipment, ingredients, basic techniques and main cocktail families
The course will be a blended learning format of five 2-hour online synchronous sessions (live and recorded) on the Zoom platform. Upon confirmation of registration, students will receive details from Christina about how to receive a selection of spirit samples (included in tuition fee) for guided online tasting using the SAT during the online sessions.  
The course will take place on Mondays, April 12th - May 10th @ 2:30pm - 4:30pm and is taught by Christina Veira.

Golden Vines launches Diversity Scholarships for MW and MS

Liquid Icons, in association with the Gerard Basset Wine Education Charitable Foundation have launched two annual Golden Vines Diversity Scholarships for Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) wishing to undertake the Masters of Wine (MW) and/or Master Sommelier (MS) programs. These scholarships are open to candidates from all over the world and are each worth up to £55,000. The scholarships will cover all course and examination costs, as well as loss of earnings during work placement internships. The scholarship program also includes a short academic course at one of a selection of leading wine education institutions followed by a 12 month internship program with a top fine wine domaine.

The judging panel for the Golden Vines Diversity Scholarships is comprised of Nina Basset FIH, Rajat Parr (Sandhi Wines), Carlton McCoy MS (Heitz Cellar), Clement Robert MS (The Birley Clubs / Annabel’s) and Jancis Robinson OBE MW. The judges will also provide ongoing mentorship to the Golden Vines Diversity Scholars during their academic journey.

Zoom through wine with WSET Certified Educator Erin Salmon 

WSET Level 1 Award in Wines on Zoom is a beginner level wine course for those starting a wine career or beginning to explore wine for personal interest, with no prerequisite required.

The course will be based around a condensed format presentation, with 3 x one-hour sessions on Zoom and educator support available for this time.
 
Session One: What is wine and how is it made?
  • The basic principles of grape-growing and wine production
  • Identify how different grape-growing climates affect the characteristics of different styles of wine
  • Structured tasting of two wines using the WSET's Systematic Approach to Tasting
Session Two: Types and styles of wine made from the principal grape varieties/Introduction to tasting
  • Factors affecting the flavour of different styles of wine: still, sparkling and fortified
  • Structured tasting of two to three wines using the WSET's Systematic Approach to Tasting (students are responsible for purchasing two recommended wines)
Session Three: Storage & Service of Wines / Pairing Food & Wines / Review
  • How to serve and store wine (for short and long-term)
  • Identify the principal food and wine interactions and the effect they typically have on a wine

Certificate in Irish Whiskey

 

In partnership with the Edinburgh Whisky Academy, the Independent Wine Education Guild is pleased to announce the new online course Certificate in Irish Whiskey

Exploring the fascinating world of whiskey across eight modules with engaging online content that provide an enhanced in-depth knowledge and appreciation of the different styles of Irish whiskey. The course was written and developed by Irish whiskey experts Fionnán O’Connor and Matt Healy.

You will explore the history and business of Irish whiskey, before learning the whole production and maturation processes, including the different equipment used dependent on the different mash bills adopted. You will also learn about legal requirements and how to run a sensory analysis of Irish whiskey via a tutored tasting. The flexible, self-paced format allows you to learn in your own time and, with quizzes at the end of each module, you can measure all the knowledge you’re distilling as you go.
