WSET DIPLOMA COORDINATORS
Eugene Mlynczyk MW, DipWSET has been in love with wine since his college days in California.  After returning home to Toronto in the early 1990s, he began to direct a portion of his modest earnings to local Niagara wines, further nurturing his oenophile passion.  Eugene subscribes to the maxim “Carpe Diem” (meaning “sieze the day”), so he began to study wine and sought employment in the wine industry, which began 15 years ago and continues to this day.  Another of Eugene’s central beliefs is that no one should ever stop learning, so after completing all WSET course levels through Diploma, Eugene enrolled in the Master of Wine program in 2011. Eugene was thrilled to complete all the program requirements in 2015 and be awarded the “MW” designation: hooray!  Besides wine, Eugene focuses on family when not also running in the woods competing in his favourite sport, orienteering.

Peter Wearing DipWSET became interested in wine  many years ago when he discovered that wine is just as much about the people and their story as the product itself. This interest led to his co-founding of The Small Winemakers Collection, an importing agency based in Toronto. What started as a way to write-off travel turned into a full-time occupation and he eventually quit his day job at the turn of the millennium. Today, he is managing director of the company, which has 15 employees. His particular area of interest is in French and Italian wines. He regularly travels to Europe and makes sure to visit Burgundy every year. Since completing the WSET Diploma, Peter has found a new outlet for his enthusiasm as an instructor. He enjoys sharing his experience in the industry and WSET with eager students.

" ...With various courses leading up to the Diploma, WSET has, along with the Master of Wine, one of the best known wine qualifications in the world. The MW may be seen as the Rolls-Royce of wine qualifications but the WSET Diploma is the Bentley - less elitest and exclusive, more accessible and, yup, more fun really."  Ian Harris CEO WSET

"WSET rocks! The best place to start (and continue) your professional appreciation of wine." - Tim Atkin MW

HISTORY OF FLAVOURED SPIRITS AND LIQUEURS

Did you know that flavoured spirits are not a modern invention? While dubious creations like whipped cream flavoured vodka are 21st century "achievements", which bring junk-food brand extension strategies to the liquor store, flavoured spirits and liqueurs have histories likely as old as distillation itself.

Alcohol has long been prized for its ability to preserve the aromas, flavours and pharmacological properties of botanical ingredients, which otherwise would only be seasonally available. Spring was an especially important time for gathering herbs, flowers and early berries, all of which provided a health-giving lift after the monotony of a winter diet. Chartreuse, a monastic liqueur dating from 1605, contains over 130 Alpine herbs and plants, and was originally marketed as an "élixir végétal". It is now used in cocktails, and as a digestif.

Come learn about classical and contemporary spirits and cocktails at our upcoming WSET Level 1 Award in Spirits

IWEG STUDENT PROFILE: BRENDAN FEENEY

IWEG student Brendan Feeney is consistently one of the top exam scorers with the Wine Scholar Guild. We asked Brendan to tell us more about how he became interested in the French Wine Scholar:

''My interest in French food and wine was initiated by the exploits of the infamous Keith Floyd. Opportunities to enjoy at first hand the very distinct and much varied regional fare and libations were afforded by subsequent periods of study in Paris, careers in hospitality, sales, education and interpreting (Dutch, English, French and German) and many a summer spent traveling throughout France.

As a way of adding more specific, in-depth industry knowledge to that experience and to the WSET certification and seminars taken with IWEG in Toronto, enrollment in the French Wine Scholar course was ideal.

The Provence Master Level Program, with its comprehensive content and opportunity to learn from such an expert as Elizabeth Gabay, has allowed me to develop a sound understanding and acute appreciation of the complexity of all that is Provencal. Upon completion of the Rhone Master Level course, I am looking forward to embarking on an exciting career in the industry, completing the transition from wine enthusiast to wine professional.''
