Fill in the (Wine) Gaps

Study tips from a couple stuck at home

Alex and Erica are engaged and live in Toronto's east end. Alex is an HR professional and entrepreneur, and Erica is a lawyer practising international trade law. Wine is a passion and hobby: together, they manage Decanting Ontario, a blog dedicated to supporting Ontario's wine regions and sharing wine knowledge, reviews and tips. We checked in on them as they progress through WSET Level 2 Award in Wines online

Why did you sign up for the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines online course?

We've always casually enjoyed wine and have picked up bits and pieces of knowledge over time, but never learned about it in a dedicated and structured way. Taking a WSET course was always a goal of ours, to help fill in the gaps, so to speak. Since it turns out that when staying home/physical distancing we have a lot of free time on our hands (and there's only so much Netflix a person can watch!). It's been perfect - we even have each other as built-in study partners.

Some may be hesitant to study wine online. Do you have any study advice or tips?

It's helpful to carve out dedicated study and tasting time - we try to schedule it as though it were a meeting, so for example on Wednesdays at 5pm we will sit down and work through the tastings for that week's module. Finding our own ways to reinforce the knowledge is useful too, so we'll do things like have (virtual) tastings with friends, watch a wine documentary or read a book (recent favourites are "Cork Dork" and "Natural Wine for the People").

How do you and Alex plan to use your new wine knowledge?

For now, this is purely for fun and something we'll enjoy sharing with friends and family. We'll also use our new wine knowledge to evaluate wine more critically and share more thorough reviews and tips with readers of our blog, Decanting Ontario.
