Learn all about spirits and cocktails with expert bartender Christina Veira

WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits is a beginner to intermediate level spirits course for enthusiasts or those working in the industry, or hoping to enter the industry. There are no prerequisites.

This course provides fundamental product knowledge and systematic tasting skills. You will:
  • Explore major spirits categories and styles, as well as liqueurs, vermouth and cocktails
  • Learn in detail about the 4 main steps in spirits production
  • Learn what labelling terms mean
  • Develop assessment and description skills as you sample a range of benchmark examples using the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Spirits® (SAT)
  • Understand basic principles of spirits storage and service
  • Learn about cocktail equipment, ingredients, basic techniques and main cocktail families
The course will be a blended learning format of five 2-hour online synchronous sessions (live and recorded) on the Zoom platform. Upon confirmation of registration, students will receive details from Christina about how to receive a selection of spirit samples (included in tuition fee) for guided online tasting using the SAT during the online sessions.  
The course will take place on Mondays, April 12th - May 10th @ 2:30pm - 4:30pm and is taught by Christina Veira.

IWEG offers online WSET courses through WSET’s Online Classroom, which allows you to study alongside your peers under the guidance of a dedicated educator. Discover the wines of Germany, one bottle at a time!

Each month, in collaboration with Wines of Germany, we will present a featured wine of the month that is available through the LCBO. Purchase the featured wine and practice your tasting skills for a chance to win a Wines of Germany prize package!

The March wine is the single vineyard Quarzit Riesling 2018 (LCBO#:18251), a first time release from Harald Hexamer in Germany's Nahe region.
 
This terroir-driven Riesling was chosen this month in honour of Riesling's birthday on March 13, the date of the grape's first documented existence in 1435, in a cellar log from Germany's small Hessische Bergstrasse wine region. Share your tasting note with us!

Here’s how to participate:
1. Purchase Quarzit Riesling 2018. at the LCBO.
2. Take a picture of the wine and write a short tasting note on the wine.
3. If you are on social media, post your photo and tasting note and tag IWEG and Wines of Germany Canada on any or all of these social media platforms:

4.Send your photo, tasting note, copy of LCBO receipt and contact and mailing details by email to IWEG at marketing@iweg.org.
The name and submitted photo and tasting note of the winner will be published in the IWEG newsletter by April 8.

Contest details:
From January to June, we will present a featured wine of the month for IWEG students that is available through the LCBO retail network.

Each month a winner will be selected to receive a Wines of Germany prize package that includes a $50 LCBO Gift card redeemable on German wine and Wines of Germany swag.

The selected winner will be contacted by IWEG to confirm mailing details.

Effort will be made to select wines that are readily available in LCBO stores and online to allow time for wine pick up or delivery.

Vinequity Scholarship Program

Vinequity has open their first round of scholarship applications. The IWEG partner believes access to high quality wine education and the support to excel in such programs are vitally important to diversifying the ranks of the wine industry, especially in leadership roles. Scholarships range from $250-$5000 to a variety of top tier wine education programs such as the Court of Master Sommeliers, and the Wine & Spirit Education Trust. Scholarship applicants are invited to select the monetary amount and educational resources that will best aid them in their career trajectory.

The application deadline is April 9, 2021 and scholarships will be awarded April 30, 2021.

To apply, applicants must meet the scholarship eligibility requirements: 
  • At least 19 years of age
  • Identify as Black, Indigenous or Person of Colour
  • Applicant must specify a specific course, education provider and enrollment date to which they are requesting funding
  • Completed and signed scholarship application that meets the criteria and includes all required attachments, which must be postmarked or electronically submitted no later than 11:59 PM on the application deadline date (April 9, 2021) to be considered for the scholarship.
