25 Spanish Wine Terms You Need To Know

Learn more about Spanish Wines this fall

Cosecha. Joven. Viejo. And the list goes on. Many wine-producing countries use local-language wine-related terminology without realizing their consumers are unaware of their meaning. Even native language speakers are sometimes confused by these terms as they are technical and/or relate to wine law.

Here are the top 25 wine terms you need to know to navigate Spanish wine.

Spanish Wine Scholar
The Spanish Wine Scholar provides current, accurate and in-depth information on the wines and wine regions of Spain. Developed and administered by the Wine Scholar Guild (WSG), the course is aimed at advanced students of wine whether professionals or serious wine hobbyists. The course will taught by IWEG's Spanish wine specialists and WSG approved instructors Kim Berdusco DipWSET and Caitlin Ferguson DipWSET.

The fall 2020 comprises of seven interactive theory classes delivered remotely via the video conferencing platform Zoom on Thursdays, October 1 to November 12 from 6:30pm - 8pm. An in-person experiential tasting workshop will take place safely on Thursday, November 19 followed by an in-person exam on Thursday, November 26.

WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines 

Online program starts in October

The market-leading WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines qualification provides expert level knowledge and develops key analytical skills for success in the global wine business. Perfect for both the trade professional and the serious enthusiast, the course will arm you with specialist-level skills and experience, plus international recognition as an expert in the field of wine.

Holders of the Diploma will be able to identify characteristics of the principal wines of the world, make informed assessments of a product's quality and value, and identify appropriate opportunities for the products within a given market. 

Graduates will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to underpin the job requirements in such roles as Food & Beverage ManagerWine Buyer or Sales Executive.

The Diploma fulfills the prerequisite for the wine qualification requirement for entry to the Master of Wine (MW) program.

This year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the online WSET Diploma program will begin in October and a condensed in-class WSET Diploma program is planned for January.
