Here's how the Spanish Wine Scholar will run this fall

The Spanish Wine Scholar provides current, accurate and in-depth information on the wines and wine regions of Spain. Developed and administered by the Wine Scholar Guild (WSG), the course is aimed at advanced students of wine whether professionals or serious wine hobbyists. The course will taught by IWEG's Spanish wine specialists and WSG approved instructors Kim Berdusco DipWSET and Caitlin Ferguson DipWSET.

You will:

  • Develop specialist knowledge of the DO / DOCa regions in seven sessions involving: Green Spain; The Duero River Valley; La Rioja; The Ebro River Valley / Central Mediterranean Coast; Cataluña;  La Meseta /Islands and Andalucia
  • Appreciate the cultural context of Spanish wine
  • Consider the vineyard and winery factors that contribute to wine styles
  • Taste a curated range of Spanish wines specially prepared for this course by IWEG's WSG authorized instructors

The fall 2020 comprises of seven interactive theory classes delivered remotely via the video conferencing platform Zoom on Thursdays, October 1 to November 12 from 6:30pm - 8pm. An in-person experiential tasting workshop will take place safely on Thursday, November 19 followed by an in-person exam on Thursday, November 26.

Continue Your WSET Studies this Fall

Here's how our WSET Level 2 and 3 courses will run

Our fall WSET Level 2 and Level 3 courses will be offered in a blended learning format with interactive theory classes delivered remotely via the video conferencing platform Zoom, and in-person tasting workshops at the school to showcase recommended tasting samples and hone your Systematic Approach to Tasting (SAT) skills.

WSET Level 2 Award in Wines is a beginner to intermediate level qualification exploring wines for those working in the industry, looking to join the industry or for wine enthusiasts.

You will:

  • Learn how wine is made
  • Explore the style and quality of wines made from over 22 regionally important grape varieties produced in over 70 wine growing regions around the world
  • Explore how environmental factors, grape growing, winemaking and maturation options influence the style and quality of wines made from eight principal grape varieties
  • Learn how classifications and other labelling terms indicate origin, style and quality
  • Develop assessment and description skills as you sample wines, sparkling wines and fortified wines
  • Learn how to understand and be able to apply basic principles of wine storage, service and food and wine pairing
  • Learn how to describe wine using the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

The course comprises of five remote theory classes and three in-person tasting workshops. The final exam will offered remotely via WSET's Remote Invigilation Services.

WSET Level 3 Award in Wines is an advanced level course for wine industry professionals, those seeking to join the profession, or for wine enthusiasts wishing to develop a deeper understanding of wine.

You will:

  • Explore in detail grape varieties, wines and wine-growing regions
  • Develop a thorough understanding of grape-growing and wine-making practices
  • Explain how and why various vineyard and winery factors shape wines of all styles and quality levels
  • Learn how to assess and describe wine with confidence, and be able to make storage and service suggestions
  • Understand how to taste wines and describe their characteristics and evaluate their quality using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

The course comprises of ten remote theory classes and four in-person tasting workshops. The final exam will take place in-person at IWEG.

WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines 

Online program starts in October

The market-leading WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines qualification provides expert level knowledge and develops key analytical skills for success in the global wine business. Perfect for both the trade professional and the serious enthusiast, the course will arm you with specialist-level skills and experience, plus international recognition as an expert in the field of wine.

Holders of the Diploma will be able to identify characteristics of the principal wines of the world, make informed assessments of a product's quality and value, and identify appropriate opportunities for the products within a given market. 

Graduates will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to underpin the job requirements in such roles as Food & Beverage ManagerWine Buyer or Sales Executive.

The Diploma fulfills the prerequisite for the wine qualification requirement for entry to the Master of Wine (MW) program.

This year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the online WSET Diploma program will begin in October and a condensed in-class WSET Diploma program is planned for January.
