WSET Diploma student Isa has such a hunger for learning, that she will use any free time (and place) to keep up with her studies. Here's what drew her to wine education how she stays motivated:

I fell in love with the wine world as soon as I stepped foot on a local vineyard in the summer of 2015. Up until that point, wine — as in bottled, labeled, ready to serve — had been something, almost more of an object, that I was familiar with showing up in cases at the LCBO I had been working at for 3 years. But stepping onto a vineyard and experiencing the vines, grape bunches, staff and machinery at work, sun shining on different plots of land... it all hit me that wine has a huge story to tell, which begins many years before I even got the opportunity  to enjoy what I pour.

I began taking WSET classes through IWEG in 2016, with Level 2 and then completing Level 3 in 2017. By this point, I had already completed an International BA in Trilingual Studies, but I was hungry for more knowledge in this fascinating field. Wine is one of those incredibly interesting yet frustrating subjects in which the more one learns, the less one feels they may know (at least in my experience). But the Diploma in wine has been incredibly eye opening and my curiosity is getting more and more sated as the studies continue.

I have definitely been using all my free time (including breaks at work) to read/study. Working full-time while taking classes is a first for me, which I definitely found challenging at the beginning. I am getting into more of a routine these days, & talking to customers about wines has been extremely helpful for me to retain the information I am learning. I find myself motivated to teach others everything I have just discovered myself.

Wishing all the best to my fellow IWEG and WSET students. Keep crackin’, we’ve got this!
A Conversation with Steven Spurrier
The Vintage Conservatory, in collaboration with the Academie du Vin is hosting a webinar with the world’s best-selling wine author Steven Spurrier. Christopher Waters, IWEG's Director of Education and wine columnist for The Globe and Mail will host the event. This webinar is free for the IWEG community.

On Saturday, December 19th at 1PM, join in a conversation with British wine icon Steven Spurrier who has been called “the man who changed wine forever” thanks to his role in organizing the momentous Judgement of Paris tasting in 1976. A consultant editor for Decanter and one of the masterminds behind the new Académie du Vin Library initiative, Spurrier has long been a champion of good wine as well as good wine writing. Both have the capacity to elevate the senses, inform and educate. His life in wine has cast him in countless roles where he has excelled: journalist, buyer, entrepreneur, vintner, mentor, restaurateur, educator, judge, communicator, and consultant. Join Spurrier and Christopher Waters for a free-ranging conversation about his life’s pursuit, his memoirs A Life in Wine, and his current passion project, making sparkling wine at his winery, Bride Valley Vineyard. Sign up now!
