NOMINEES ANNOUNCED FOR WSET OUTSTANDING ALUMNI AWARD

IWEG is delighted to share that IWEG alum Yang Lu has been nominated for the new WSET Outstanding Alumni Award, an annual accolade that will celebrate a WSET Diploma graduate who is notably contributing to the industry. The nominees have been chosen by the WSET International Alumni Advisory Board and renowned Master of Wine Jancis Robinson herself.

"This new annual award will celebrate the outstanding contributions of one successful individual, chosen by our alumni network, and who better to partner with than the website founded by one of our most esteemed graduates, Jancis Robinson," said WSET Chief Executive, Ian Harris

Yang Lu is widely regarded as one of the most influential sommeliers in Greater China, raising the status of Chinese sommeliers across the industry. Following the completion of Viticulture

and Winemaking studies in Canada and receiving the WSET Diploma in 2011 at IWEG where he was awarded the Wines of Germany scholarship, Yang moved back to Shanghai in 2009. Upon his return to China, Yang Lu went on to win Best Sommelier Greater China 2014, and since then has has won all three major sommelier competitions in China.

He was previously sommelier at the Peninsula Shanghai, where he profoundly raised the status of Chinese sommeliers across the industry. Yang is currently Corporate/Group Wine Director for Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, overseeing the wine program and sommelier team for the entire group. He is also a highly regarded wine educator in China, regularly teaching WSET courses and giving seminars on wine. He is a columnist for DecanterChina.com, contributes to several magazines and worked on Chinese translations of How to Taste by Jancis Robinson MW and World Atlas of Wine.

Diploma graduates from across the world are invited to vote to select the winner of this industry honour. Voting is open now and will close on November 14, 2016. Diploma graduates will receive an email explaining how they can cast their vote.

GOURMET FOOD & WINE EXPO: NOW &THEN

Learn how aroma and flavour are affected by age and appreciate the nuances that maturity brings to a wine’s character. Ageability is a significant element to wine education, which is often overlooked. Is the wine in your glass at its best?

Or does the wine have the potential to evolve? This is a key factor in distinguishing fine wines from simply good ones. IWEG has partnered with Wines of Germany for a one-of-a-kind tasting to showcase why Riesling is one of the most age-worthy wines on earth. This flight of Ontario and international wines will compare current releases alongside an aged, library vintage, presenting the rare opportunity to compare and contrast. This tutored tasting will be led by WSET Diploma Coordinator Peter Wearing, DipWSET.

Meet the new German Wine Queen, Lena Endesfelder at the tasting!

Each tutored tasting ticket comes with an elite pass to the Gourmet Food & Wine Expo.

WSET DIPLOMA STUDENT PROFILE: EDEL EBBS

Edel is in the second year of study for the WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wine and Spirits at IWEG.  Edel has always been a passionate, but informal, student of wine and began formal studies in 2014 through the WSET school in London, England.  Following completion of the WSET Level 3 Advanced Award in Wine and Spirits with Distinction, she decided to take the leap and pursue the challenging Diploma program in Toronto with IWEG.

“Having recently moved on from almost two decades as an executive in the technology and finance industries, I was eager to learn a new industry and delve deeper into pursuing one of my lifelong passions,” she said. “The WSET accreditations and particularly the Diploma program at IWEG have more than fit the bill.  I’ve been able to indulge my inner wine geek with abandon, meet like-minded people who share my passion, and challenge myself both through the intensive theory and rigorous blind tasting components of the program.”

“In particular I like the focus that the WSET Diploma at IWEG puts on not just tasting and describing wines and spirits accurately, but on understanding all of the elements - from viticulture and vinification through to the trade structures and regulatory frameworks - that influence the style and quality of the wine in the glass.”

“My other passion is travel, and that goes hand in hand with my wine studies,” Edel said.  “I have had the opportunity to travel to close to 20 wine regions around the world (and counting!) and the depth of knowledge and tasting experience I have gained through the WSET programs are invaluable resources that enhance the enjoyment and sensory reward of these trips.”

Edel’s goals in pursuing the Diploma are both to feed her intellectual curiosity and to meld her prior experience in communications and business strategy with her passion for all things wine. “I entered the WSET program purely out of passion and a desire to challenge myself,” she said. “But as I have gone deeper into my studies I see opportunities to leverage my prior business experience to help grow and redefine companies in the world of wine and spirits.”

IWEG INSTRUCTOR PROFILE: NANCY REYNOLDS

Italian Wine Scholar and French Wine Scholar instructor Nancy Reynolds complements her lifelong wine education with frequent travel to wine regions. We invited her to share her recent experience in Rhone:

"I recently travelled to the Rhone Valley for a four day Master Rhone Certification course sponsored by Inter-Rhone.  This was the first time the course was held and I was privileged to be invited to attend it.  There were 10 students from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Mexico, USA and Canada.

The course started in Northern Rhone with visits to Le Vins de Vienne, Paul Jaboulet Aine and Yann Chave and a stop at the popular chocolate shop, Valrhona in Tain-l’Hermitage.  On the second day, we travelled to the South with stops at Ogier and Alain Jaume in Chateauneuf-du-pape, as well as Chateau Saint-Maurice in Laudun.  The last two days were spent in the classroom at the beautiful Universite du Vin at Suze-la-Rousse.  The trip ended with theory and tasting exams, and with presentation of our certificates.

It was a wonderful four day experience.  We had a chance to explore Northern and Southern Rhone Valley wines from a wide variety of producers and to learn in depth about the personalities of the Valley.  Thank you to Inter-Rhone."

Nancy will be teaching our upcoming French Wine Scholar and Italian Wine Scholar courses:

November 17th: Bourgogne Terroir

With the Hospices de Beaune wine auction each November, we decided to dedicate our November seminar to Bourgogne. Many wine students and consumers struggle with the myriad of regulations and villages in the region. Add to this the unmatched diversity in terroir and it is not difficult to see how Bourgogne can be a challenging region to understand. This class is designed to clear up some of the confusion and allow students to gain insight into some of the wines from the mid and upper villages of the region through an exclusive tasting of eight wines, including rarely seen wines from Premier Crus in Nuits-St-Georges, Givry and Maranges.  This seminar will be led by Eugene Mlynczyk, MW and is supported by the Bureau Interprofessionnel des Vins de Bourgogne (BIVB).

December 8th: Excellence of New World Sparkling Wines

Just in time for the holidays, IWEG will showcase a line up of exclusively new world sparkling wines, designed to prove that many of these stand up or even exceed Champagne's expectations. Curious as to what makes sparkling wine the universal pairing with food? Oyster Boy will also be here to shed some light on that.

January 19th: Single Malt Whisky - Contribution of the Cask

IWEG is pleased to present Marc Laverdiere, The Macallan and Highland Park Emeritus Ambassador and Keeper of the Quaich, to moderate this seminar on single malt whisky. Perfect for the whisky lover wanting to learn more about the nuances of single malts or for those looking for an introduction, this evening will present a one of a kind opportunity to gain insight and knowledge to this intriguing genre of spirits. Slàinte mhath!

MEET CHIANTI CLASSICO GRAN SELEZIONE

The Chianti Classico Consorzio recently introduced the newest category of Chianti Classico: Gran Selezione. This category is a new classification above Riserva within the historic Chianti Classico production area.

Chianti Classico Gran Selezione must be made from estate-grown grapes of a single vineyard (or selection of the estate's best parcels) and the aging requirements are longer than those of riserva, 30 months vs. 24 months, including three months in bottle. Sangiovese must make up at least 80 percent of the blend, with other approved grape varieties allowed by the Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG). The wine must also be judged and approved by a tasting panel led by the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classic.

The Consorzio estimates that about 10 percent of Chianti Classico DOCG production will qualify for the Gran Selezione level. As consumers gain awareness of the new category, they will discover these are uniformly high-quality wines justifiably deserving a separate category.

MEET THE NEW GERMAN WINE QUEEN

Radiant and amidst deafening cheers, Lena Endesfelder from Mehring was recently crowned as the new German Wine Queen.  To the audiences’s amusement the first words she spoke into the microphone following her coronation were “I need a drink!” followed by “I´m just so thrilled.…It´s such a terrific moment and I´m looking forward to an exciting and eventful year in the service of the German wine industry.”

Despite being only 23 years old, Lena is a wine industry veteran having already successfully completed her bachelor studies in viticulture and oenology at Geisenheim University, launched her first solo wine with the 2014 vintage and joined her mother and sister in running the family wine estate in Mehring.
