A message from IWEG's Executive Director

Dear students and prospective students,

I am delighted to share with you some exciting new course introductions and updates for the new school year, which starts this fall:

  • Launch of the new WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines. As the original - and now the largest - WSET school in Canada, IWEG is excited to be delivering WSET’s new flagship award, a highly coveted and much respected, expert-level qualification covering all aspects of wine.

  • Launch of Wine Scholar Guild’s brand new Spanish Wine Scholar study and certification program, which will be available globally at the beginning of October. We are excited to be offering this deep-dive certification into Spanish wines and wine regions, building on the phenomenal success that the school has enjoyed with both the French Wine Scholar and Italian Wine Scholar programs.

  •  Launch of WSET’s brand new Level 2 Award in Wines, which replaces the current “wine and spirits” beginner to intermediate level qualification and offers a completely refreshed and updated curriculum on the principal and regionally important grape varieties of the world, the regions in which they are grown and the styles of wine they produce.

  •  Re-ignition of our WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits, which will launch in September and will feature WSET Educator Christina Viera, a highly respected and sought after educator from the spirits community.

  • Expansion of IWEG’s course offerings in Ottawa, through our partnership with Alqonquin College, including French Wine Scholar and the Italian Wine Scholar. We are excited to welcome Marie-France Boudreault-Champagne, Steve Robinson and Liam Doody to the IWEG instructor team!

Thank you to our passionate WSET Certified Educators and Wine Scholar Guild instructors for providing our students with the support and encouragement to succeed in their studies. We would like to thank also all of our sponsors and trade partners for their generous support of initiatives that enhance the learning experience for all of our students. Without their generous support many of the masterclasses, scholarship awards and study-trips that we currently offer would not be possible.

We will continue to be Canada's premier student-focused institution for wine, spirits and sake education. I invite you to contact the IWEG team at atheunissen@iweg.org or at 416-534-2570 to find out how we can help you achieve your professional goals and personal aspirations in wine, spirits and sake education.

We look forward to seeing you in class!

Sincerely,

Paul Miles DipWSET
Executive Director

WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits

Led by Christina Veira

IWEG is pleased to introduce our new WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits instructor Christina Veira. Christina was chosen as one of Imbibe Magazine’s Imbibe 75, "one of the people, places and directions that will shape the way you drink in 2019". Most recently, she curated the Bar & Beverage Pavilion at Restaurants Canada Show and Speed Rack Canada (Seasons 3 & 4).

She has occupied every front-of-house position (and a couple in the kitchen) while pursuing certifications in wine and beer, even winning a cocktail competition here and there. When not in her present role managing a multi-venue event space, her focus is on industry education, event execution and using the hospitality industry as a catalyst for community engagement and fundraising.

She aims to establish her project “Side Duties” as a registered Canadian non-profit with the goal of linking the hospitality industry with local charities and initiatives that are mutually beneficial. Over the course of the last few years, she has been able to harness her skills while raising over $50k for Nellie’s Women’s Shelter and various other charities.

Christina will be teaching a revamped WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits on Mondays, September 3rd - October 7th @ 7PM - 9PM. Sign up now!
