Take advantage of the down time

Danielle Chandler is the ultimate wine scholar. Having previously completed the Italian Wine Scholar, she also recently studied both the French Wine Scholar and the Italian Wine Scholar at IWEG. Here's her experience with the courses:

Over the last year, I decided to take advantage of the down time in my regular work due to the COVID pandemic by registering for both my Spanish Wine Scholar and French Wine Scholar. Having already completed both units of the Italian Wine Scholar, I was thrilled to be able to deepen my knowledge and understanding of both France and Spain.  As a wine consultant and educator, this additional education has allowed me to share my passion for these wines and regions with my clients through the various tasting and education events that I lead in my wine consulting business. I would recommend the Wine Scholar Guild courses for anyone who is looking to build their confidence and knowledge in a specific country and is a great resource for anyone doing further studies in WSET (level 3 or Diploma) or other wine certifications.

I found the Wine Scholar courses to be thorough, well-structured, and designed with ample opportunities to support different learning styles including use of a traditional manual as well as e-learning modules and review supports. I particularly found the online quizzes and flashcards to be very helpful for my own studies. The instructors were excellent and extremely knowledgeable with their subject and are able to enhance the learning with planned activities and review during the online Zoom class.

Join the class of 2023

The market-leading WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines qualification provides expert level knowledge and develops key analytical skills for success in the global wine business. Perfect for both the trade professional and the serious enthusiast, the course will arm you with specialist-level skills and experience, plus international recognition as an expert in the field of wine.

Holders of the Diploma will be able to identify characteristics of the principal wines of the world, make informed assessments of a product's quality and value, and identify appropriate opportunities for the products within a given market.

Graduates will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to underpin the job requirements in such roles as Food & Beverage Manager, Wine Buyer or Sales Executive.

The Diploma fulfills the prerequisite for the wine qualification requirement for entry to the Master of Wine (MW) program.

A smaller in-class WSET Diploma program will begin on August 25 and an online WSET Diploma program will begin on October 4.

If you are interested in the WSET Diploma program and would like to learn more, we would be happy answer your questions. Please email Krystenne MacMullin at krystenne@iweg.org

The IWEG Experience

Our Diploma Graduates over the years have gone on to become vital members of the wine and spirits industry in Canada and worldwide. IWEG holds the record for having the largest amount of Diploma graduates in Canada!

IWEG has been offering Diploma studies for longer than any institute outside of the WSET School in London, which means we enjoy a long history of student success. Our current pass rate for the most rigorous component, "Wines of the World", is 22 percent higher than the global average pass rate for this unit of study.

Our passionate and highly qualified Diploma educators, who come from different fields within the trade, provide on-going support to help you master the analytical tasting skills and supplemental theoretical knowledge necessary to succeed.

Keeping the “i” in i4C

The 11th anniversary of the International Cool Climate Chardonnay Celebration will take place this year on July 23-25, 2021. And while international producers are not going to be at the celebration in person for i4C this year,  they certainly will be in spirit, and definitely in the glasses!

To keep the “international” front and centre as we prepare for the 2021 International Cool Climate Chardonnay Celebration, check in virtually with five producers around the globe. In the week leading up to i4C, you can “zoom” to Argentina, Australia, Italy, South Africa and British Columbia to get a cool insider’s view. (OK, it’s not all Zoom, some is Instagram Live!)

(No pre-registration needed. Just tune in from your computer or device using the links given below at the times indicated.)

Discover the wines of Germany, one bottle at a time!

Each month, in collaboration with Wines of Germany, we have presented a featured wine of the month that is available through the LCBO. IWEG students were invited to purchase the featured wine and practice their tasting skills for a chance to win a Wines of Germany prize package!

The July and final winner is Pauline. Here is their tasting note for Königschaffhauser Steingrüble Trocken Pinot Noir 2018 (LCBO #:460410):

Appearance: Med ruby
Nose: Med intensity, expressive floral perfume aroma with notes of fresh strawberry, cranberry, red cherry, pomegranate, sandalwood, and wet earth
Palate: Dry, Med(+) acidity, Med(-) tannin, Med alcohol, Med(-) body, Med intensity with flavours of fresh strawberry, raspberry, cherry, sweet spice, cedar, and wet wood with savoury undertone.

Very good and impressive.

Wines of Germany thanks all participants in the challenge this year.
