The market-leading WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines qualification provides expert level knowledge and develops key analytical skills for success in the global wine business. Perfect for both the trade professional and the serious enthusiast, the course will arm you with specialist-level skills and experience, plus international recognition as an expert in the field of wine.

Holders of the Diploma will be able to identify characteristics of the principal wines of the world, make informed assessments of a product's quality and value, and identify appropriate opportunities for the products within a given market.

Graduates will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to underpin the job requirements in such roles as Food & Beverage Manager, Wine Buyer or Sales Executive.

The Diploma fulfills the prerequisite for the wine qualification requirement for entry to the Master of Wine (MW) program.

A smaller in-class WSET Diploma program will begin on August 25 and an online WSET Diploma program will begin on October 4.

If you are interested in the WSET Diploma program and would like to learn more, we would be happy answer your questions. Please email Krystenne MacMullin at krystenne@iweg.org

The IWEG Experience

Our Diploma Graduates over the years have gone on to become vital members of the wine and spirits industry in Canada and worldwide. IWEG holds the record for having the largest amount of Diploma graduates in Canada!

Our current pass rate for the most rigorous component, "Wines of the World", is 22 percent higher than the global average pass rate for this unit of study.

Our passionate and highly qualified Diploma educators, who come from different fields within the trade, provide on-going support to help you master the analytical tasting skills and supplemental theoretical knowledge necessary to succeed.

Uncorked, literally: Comparing styles of corkscrew

There is a common saying, "Always use the right tool for the job". When it comes to opening a bottle of wine, the job is simple. However, the tool: corkscrews, are varied. With so many different styles of corkscrews, how do you choose what's best for you? Learn about the several styles of corkscrews and their various nuances to help determine the best addition to your wine toolkit.

The classic wine regions

Kevin Pogacar is a top-performing French Wine Scholar and the Italian Wine Scholar student at IWEG. Here's his experience with the courses:

The goal for me with the Wine Scholar Guild (WSG) courses was to get a 'diploma-level' education without having to invest a huge chunk of time and money in something such as WSET 4. The WSG courses were very informative and I felt the tests were quite fair. The online study aids (presentations and quizzes) were great in terms of studying the need-to-know topics, along with the textbook which provided a bit more depth to the material. I originally took the WSG courses to bolster my understanding of these classic wine regions as I make my way into the wine industry, but while doing so I also ended up meeting and connecting with some very cool classmates.

Geosensorial tasting: A new way of assessing wines of terroir?

Is a wine horizontal or vertical? Square or round? Hollow or dense? Relaxed or tensed? Grainy or smooth? This is a small sample of geosensorial tasting vocabulary — a method that seeks to empower the taster to feel, interpret and give voice to wines of place. By focusing on mouthfeel and assessment criteria such as energy, salivation, geometry, texture and consistency, this methodology helps you to better understand the nuances that a specific terroir, among other factors, brings to wine and helps you to express those nuances. Learn more geosensorial tasting.
