Bordeaux Tutor’s Convention

Nancy Reynolds reports on her experience

From left to right are the tutor from Switzerland, the tutor from UAE, Canadians Romain Gruson and Nancy Reynolds and their car.IWEG instructor Nancy Reynolds travelled to Bordeaux in the spring. Here's an update on her trip:

During the weekend of May 11 and 12, l’Ecole du Vin de Bordeaux, on their 30th anniversary, held a Bordeaux Tutor’s Convention. Saturday’s program included motivational speeches, Bordeaux updates and dinner at a local chateau. However, the highlight of the weekend was Sunday’s Educational rally.

The rally was held in the area around Saint-Emilion in 2CV cars in groups of four tutors. The competition was between countries. My car had my Canadian teammate, Romain Gruson, an IWEG WSET Diploma graduate from Montreal, and tutors from UAE and Switzerland. In addition to successful navigation, points were given for correct answers to questions about the wine related activities at each stop. We learned about sustainable winemaking at Château Coutet, the importance of terroir at Derenoncourt Consultants, and the art of blending at Château Cormeil Figeac, where we made our own Cuvée of Saint-Emilion wine.

In the end, the France team of around 10 members won the competition. However, our car teammate from UAE came second and our Canadian team of two placed third. It was a very eventful day!

Nancy will be teaching the new Spanish Wine Scholar and the Italian Wine Scholar this fall. She will also be teaching the French Wine Scholar in the winter.
