IWEG's instructors have been busy this summer preparing for the September launch of the new WSET Level 3 Award in Wines. IWEG instructor Debbie Shing Dip WSET shares her views on the new course and what to expect from her classes:

"WSET Level 3 is the ultimate course for those looking to get serious about a career in the beverage industry, or to enrich and enhance one’s understanding of and appreciation for the classic wines, grapes and wine regions of the world.
The Level 3 certificate is an internationally recognized achievement that is now, more than ever, a prerequisite to employment within the top wine & spirits companies across the globe.
Having personally worked in the alcohol industry for over 13 years, in sales and marketing, within the liquor board, as an agent, as well as within the service industry, my passion today as an instructor is to give back to the community and use my experience to help students get set up for success within WSET Level 3 and in the wide world of wine beyond.
In my classes, you can expect a fun but rigorous combination of group and individual activities, as well as theory exercises designed to challenge and train you to not only think but also to taste through the question, 'Why does X wine taste the way it does?' I look forward to seeing you soon at IWEG!"

The new WSET Level 3 Award in Wines is a challenging and rewarding program that demands a commitment both to class time and self-study.  IWEG is passionate about student success and has a track record of delivering high quality learning experiences to support both in-class learning and self-study, resulting in higher than average pass rates and a high percentage of students returning to pursue higher levels of certification.

Malcolm Lamont has always been intrigued by wine, and after taking his first oenology course fell in love with the wide world of wine study. That passion led him to complete both a Sommelier Certification at Algonquin College, and the Certified Specialist of Wine credential with the Society of Wine Educators. He is currently an IWEG WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wine and Spirits candidate.
In addition to his wine credentials, Malcolm also holds a Bachelor of Education and loves to combine his passion for teaching with his passion for wine. When he is not studying or planning lessons for wine classes, Malcolm enjoys spending time in the great outdoors whether it be hiking, camping or whitewater canoeing.

We invited Malcolm to share his experience teaching WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits:

"Since the beginning of this year, I am fortunate to have the opportunity to teach the WSET Level 2 course at IWEG. After following a winding career path I have landed my dream job as a Wine Educator! This path has taken me from getting accepted in to Teacher’s College at the University of Ottawa in 2011, through to becoming a full-time Product Consultant with the LCBO in Niagara’s wine country, and now to my first year as a Wine Educator with IWEG.
The skills and techniques I learned in the Faculty of Education as well as during my two years of being a supply teacher have really helped me with my lesson planning and delivery in the wine education environment, and I must say I enjoy this process very much! Already after just a year with IWEG’s team of educators and administrators I have gained valuable wine educator skills and had some phenomenal experiences. I consider myself very fortunate to be a member of this excellent team who is devoted to the education and experience of every student who comes to our school. I look forward to the journey from here and wherever that may wind. Cheers!"

Earlier this year, the Wine and Spirit Education Trust held their awards and graduation ceremony in London, England where IWEG's Adam Bekhor was awarded the inaugural International Wine Challenge (IWC) Sake Level Three Award for the top graduate in the WSET Level 3 Award in Sake. Adam received an IWC Trophy and was invited to join the world's elite sake judges (including IWEG instructor Michael Tremblay) to judge sake in Japan at the IWC. Here are some of the highlights from Adam's trip:

The 2016 IWC competition received more entries than ever before, with 1282 sakes blind tasted by a panel of 57 judges from 14 countries, making it not only the world’s largest sake competition, but also the most international. The IWC sake judges awarded a total of 37 trophies, 57 gold medals, 196 silver medals and 245 bronze medals. Entries were received from Japan, Norway and USA as the popularity of sake continues to spread worldwide.

During the trip, the sake judges also had an opportunity to tour some of the kura (sake breweries) including Kuheiji, a cult brewery from Aichi Prefecture that is pioneering the next generation of young sake brewers. The best Yamada Nishki rice from Hyogo is carefully washed in small batches by hand and is steamed in unique square cedar koshiki (rice steamers) . Kuheiji has been revolutionary in using vintage rice as well as aging sake to develop complexity, taking cues from winemakers in Burgundy.

September 15th: Celebrating i4C
IWEG will launch the 2016-17 Signature Series season presenting the highlights and favourite wines from the highly acclaimed International Cool Climate Chardonnay Celebration. IWEG will showcase a hand selected flight of premier Canadian and other world renowned cool climate chardonnays that will illustrate the key elements of a 'cool climate' region, describe what this designation entails and discuss both the challenges and successes of winemaking in cool climate regions.

October 20th: Sake - What You Need to Know
The evening will introduce sake basics, the unique terminology relating to sake, key regions of sake production and provide the exciting opportunity to taste several sakes highlighting differences in style and regional distinctions.

November 17th: Bourgogne Terroir
With the Hospices de Beaune wine auction each November, we thought we would dedicate our November seminar to Bourgogne. Many wine students and consumers struggle with the myriad of regulations and villages in the region. Add to this the unmatched diversity in terroir and it is not difficult to see how Bourgogne can be a challenging region to understand. This class is designed to clear up some of the confusion and allow students to gain insight into the wines of Bourgogne through the senses.

December 8th: Anything but Champagne- New World Sparkling Wines
Just in time for the holidays, IWEG will showcase a line up of exclusively new world sparkling wines, designed to prove that many of these stand up or even exceed Champagne's expectations. Curious as to what makes sparkling wine the universal pairing with food? Oyster Boy will also be here to shed some light on that.

Dates and times are subject to change.
