WSET LEVEL 1 AND 2 AWARD IN SPIRITS
IWEG's Education Director and spirits expert Julia Rogers DipWSET shares her insights on why wine enthusiasts and industry professionals should include spirits in their studies:

"Did you know the global spirits market surpasses the wine market in sales and volume, and is growing exponentially faster? More people in more parts of the world are drinking spirits over wine on more occasions and are spending more to do so.

Top beverage companies furthermore typically own both wine and spirit brands. For example, Pernod-Ricard owns Campo Viejo and Jacob’s Creek, along with Beefeater and Jameson.

No student of wine should ignore the importance of spirits, or their appeal as beverages with intriguing history, fascinating production methods, compelling flavours, and multiple contexts for enjoyment.

I am pleased that we are now offering WSET Level 1 Award in Spirits in an enhanced format with an extended cocktail focus, and WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits (updated curriculum for Fall 2017) with an improved emphasis on cocktails and vermouth, and unique to IWEG, a tour of a local micro-distillery.

Both courses involve tasting of iconic samples, active learning, and expert guidance from IWEG’s Certified Spirits Specialists, Certified Educators, and industry guests. Successful course completion leads to an internationally recognized WSET Certification."

WINES OF CROATIA
Nancy Reynolds, DipWSET is an IWEG instructor for the Wine Scholar Guild'sItalian Wine Scholar and French Wine Scholar. She travels extensively through wine regions all over the world, including a recent travel to some of the wineries of Croatia. We invited Nancy to share her experience:

In May of this year I had the unique experience of discovering the wines of Croatia.  As an instructor of wine, I am not usually in a country where I know nothing about their wines.  I had been attracted to Croatia by the beautiful pictures of the Adriatic Sea, the myriad of islands, and the countless historical sites.  As a bonus, I was able to experience a new wine destination through visiting two wineries in different parts of the country.

The first was Boškinac, a Hotel, Restaurant and Winery on the Island of Pag.  Pag Island is most famous for its cheese and lamb.  It is one of the sunniest areas of Croatia, but when the “bura” wind blows, it raises sea mist depositing it around the island, consequently giving its cheeses and lamb their unique herb and salty flavours.  The hot and sunny weather is perfect for growing the Bordeaux varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and this is what Boškinac specializes in.  Mirela and Boris Šuljić planted the vines starting in 2000 and have been making full bodied and highly regarded wines since.  They also produce wines from Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, but their passion is with the indigenous white variety Gegić.  The wine is dry and lightly floral with mineral notes.  Their obsession is to produce the optimal expression of the wine and each variation is an exciting proposition for them.

Moving southward to south Dalmatia, 65 kms north of Dubrovnik is the Štimac family owned winery of Rizman.  Perched on a hill, with panoramic views of the Adriatic, the winery is modern and stylish.  The winery was revived in 2006, with an objective of enriching and strengthening Dalmatian and Croatian wines through quality methods.  Rizman specializes in the indigenous Dalmatian varieties of Pošip, Tribidrag and Plavac Mali.  Pošip is a fruity, aromatic white wine, which I found similar to Fiano from Italy.  Tribidrag is the Croatian name for the variety that North Americans know as Zinfandel.  It has recently proven through DNA analysis that Tribidrag is the origin of the variety.  Plavac Mali, a widely planted variety in Dalmatia, is a cross between Tribidrag and Dobričić which addressed mold and heat sensitivity.  The wines paired well with local cheese and Dalmatian Prosciutto as well as thick country bread dipped in Rizman’s own olive oil.

Boškinac and Rizman are just two examples of the resurgence of the Croatian wine industry.  I tasted many other exciting wines from Dalmatia, Istria and Slavonia.  Croatian wines, especially ones from ancient, indigenous varieties, have a bright future.

Nancy will be teaching the following courses this fall:
