Celebrate Carmenère

Uprooted and in disguise

Carménère is one of the most ancient European grape varietals that was ‘lost’ and then rediscovered. Originally a prevalent grape in red Bordeaux blends (along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot), the phylloxera plague wiped out most French vines in the 1860s. When the Bordeaux growers began to replant their vines, many avoided the varietal because of its vulnerability to mildew rot. The Old World presumed that Carménère went extinct.

Meanwhile in the New World winemaking country of Chile, the grape was enjoying a Mediterranean climate alongside other Bordeaux grapes brought over pre-phylloxera in the 1850s. In fact, there was more Carmenère planted in Chile than had ever been used in Bordeaux. Yet for more than a century, the Carmenère vines were mistaken for Merlot.

In 1994, French grape botany expert or ampelographer Jean-Michel Boursiquot, noticed that some of the “Merlot” vines  in Chile took longer to ripen. Boursiquot research concluded that nearly 50% of the Merlot planted in Chile was actually the long lost Carménère variety of Bordeaux. Chile officially recognized Carménère as a staple variety in 1998. These days, Carménère is so popular in Chile and beyond that it has its own holiday. Enjoy its red fruit and pepper flavour profile on International Carménère Day on November 24!

WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits

Stellar pass rates this fall

Congratulations to our fall WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits students for all passing the course with distinction or merit!

With an ever-growing choice of spirits coming to the Canadian market with more and more people choosing to enjoy distilled drinks, there is a growing need for education to build customer and staff understanding of the liquid inside the bottle.

IWEG's new spirits instructor is Christina Veira, a highly respected and sought after educator from the spirits community. Chosen as one of Imbibe Magazine’s Imbibe 75, she has occupied every front-of-house position (and a couple in the kitchen) while pursuing certifications in wine and beer, even winning a cocktail competition here and there. When not in her present role managing a multi-venue event space, Christina's focus is on industry education, event execution and using the hospitality industry as a catalyst for community engagement and fundraising.

Christina will be teaching the revamped WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits again on Mondays, April 20 - May 25 @ 6:30PM - 8:30PM. Sign up now!
