Elevate the presence and importance of BIPOC folks in Canada's wine business

Here's how you can get involved with Vinequity

Vinequity is a federally incorporated not-for-profit that aims to elevate the presence and importance of Black, Indigenous, People of Colour (BIPOC) in Canada's wine business. They recently launched with the endorsement of all five Canadian Master Sommeliers as well as IWEG.

Their 3 key pillars are:

  • IDENTIFY and raise awareness of BIPOC working in Canada's wine business via their online directory and build community
  • ADVANCE racialized and marginalized individuals wishing to improve their wine education or professional status in Canada's wine business by way of Scholarships and Mentorships
  • ADVOCATE for equal rights and opportunities for BIPOC working in Canada's wine business as well as share resources for BIPOC and allies

Your help is needed in any of the following 4 main areas:

  • FUNDING – Raise $50,000 by June 1, 2021 in order to help 25+ individuals in their wine education. Potential corporate and private donors, as well as in-kind wine donors are invited to connect.
  • BIPOC NETWORK – Help them grow their national directory! Please spread the word to anyone BIPOC who you know is a student or worker in Canada’s wine business. Their mentorship program (provided by Canada’s 5 Master Sommeliers) will begin to take applications starting October 15th, 2020 – a rare opportunity to receive direct coaching from Canada’s top sommeliers.
  • VOLUNTEERING – Vinequity is developing resources and events to share with the BIPOC wine community in Canada! If you are available to host a tasting, write an article, or contribute creative work to Vinequity, get in touch.
  • ALLIES – If you believe in their message and mission, please help by sharing their website and reposting their Instagram and LinkedIn within your network, and/or volunteer with them.

IWEG is proud to partner with Vinequity as the national provider of Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) and Wine Scholar Guild (WSG) certification programs for their scholarship recipients. To maximize access to learning opportunities, IWEG will contribute 50 percent of the WSET and WSG course costs for every Vinequity scholarship recipient.
