WSET LEVEL 4 DIPLOMA STUDENT PROFILE

IWEG WSET Diploma student Alana Fekete is the Vintages & Consignment Coordinator at Kylix Wines. We invited her to share some of her wine adventures with our readers:

I first started working for Kylix Wines in 2009 part-time while completing my Honours Bachelor of Science at the University of Toronto. Working for the agency has opened up a world of exciting possibilities for me. Perhaps the most notable are being invited to work the 2013 harvest at Peachy Canyon Winery in Paso Robles and the 2014 harvest at Torbreck in the Barossa Valley. Working with an international portfolio has also allowed me to build strong relationships with our suppliers from all across the world, so there is always something and someone to look forward to wherever you travel. Travel – another exciting part of the job! There is never a shortage of suppliers to visit and wine shows to attend. Just this year I traveled to Florence, Italy and a number of wine regions in Tuscany as well as ProWein in Düsseldorf, Germany where I tasted close to 500 wines in just 3 days.

IWEG and WSET have played an integral role both in my wine and spirits education and my professional development. The WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines and Spirits coupled with IWEG’s Signature Series and masterclasses have provided me with the knowledge and resources I need to work with winery owners, winemakers, and export managers who are at the cutting edge of their professions. I have also been able to get to know, learn from, and network with a wide range of students and teachers. So in addition to pure product knowledge, I now have a wonderful group of like-minded people that I can reach out to for questions and advice any time. I look forward to being with my diploma colleagues again and broadening my knowledge of the still wines of the world as we begin our Unit 3 studies this month.

With the Hospices de Beaune wine auction each November, we thought we would dedicate our November seminar to Bourgogne. Just in time for the holidays, IWEG will showcase a line up of exclusively new world sparkling wines, designed to prove that many of these stand up or even exceed Champagne's expectations. Curious as to what makes sparkling wine the universal pairing with food? Oyster Boy will also be here to shed some light on that.

Perfect for the whisky lover wanting to learn more about the nuances of single malts or for those looking for an introduction, this evening will present a one of a kind opportunity to gain insight and knowledge to this intriguing genre of spirits. Slàinte mhath!

Dates and times are subject to change.

Student Testimonial
"Having just received a pass in both the theory & tasting portions of the Unit 3 exam of the WSET Diploma, I'm both overjoyed and relieved. I can attribute a lot of my success to the hard work and hours spent preparing for this exam but even these would not have been enough were it not for Peter Wearing, Eugene Mlynczyk MW, & their team of instructors.

Peter's weekly guidance and tutelage can not be downplayed. His knowledge and passion for the subject were unmatched, but most importantly, he was there with a definitive plan from day one to ensure students achieved the results they aspired to. It is a very easy program to flounder in as most of the work is self study yet Peter guided our recent group to its highest pass rate in some time. His ability to frame topics in terms of potential exam relevance is unmatched. Thank you, Peter for all of your hard work and effort!"- Robert Miller
